However, the very idea that the transfer was on the table is worth discussing.

Niners had a rough season last year and would like to have a better one now, but losing Garoppolo who has been a great backup option would have been a big hit to the team’s chances to advance further than they managed last time. Garoppolo is also crucial because of the trauma suffered by Trey Lance who will likely skip the whole season and won’t be appearing on the field until next summer.
Trey Lance fractured his fibula and tore a ligament. It means that he won’t recover soon enough to fortify the team by the time it will be battling their most important opponents. Because of the surgery, Garoppolo will take over the quarterback position and try to do his best to not let the team down. He has been the backup and now must move to the starting position.
