Deontay Wilder Is Back and Wants to Get Back to the Top

Many thought that Deontay is done for after his unfortunate defeat to Tyson Fury in a trilogy of bouts that concluded on October 9, 2021. That night, something happened to Deontay. Some experts thought that he lost his drive and won’t return to professional boxing. Wilder himself was in doubt and decided to take a long break from fighting. He admitted that he contemplated full retirement from boxing, but decided to return.

The, hopefully, glorious return

The boxer decided to return in style by signing for a fight against Robert Helenius from Finland. The latter is a famous beater of former champions and comes to the fight from an impressive three wins streak. Helenius may not have the same array of awards and belts, but he is not a boy for beating. A 38-year-old veteran still packs a strong punch and can be a big problem for Wilder.

Deontay has been quite unsure whether he would return to the professional scene at all. A year-long break is also not something that should be ignored. Deontay is 36 years old. He is starting to feel what it means to lag behind younger competitors in terms of pure physique. While he has a lot of experience, he needs to be in great shape to contest top spots again.

The community support was overwhelming and forced Wilder to get back to training. He was frequently around boxing gyms but did not want to start his intense routine without any goal ahead. Now, he fights and must be ready. The big thing that should be addressed is the mental preparedness of the boxer after spending so much time without any action.

There are bigger plans on the horizon

While the fight against Helenius is very important on its own, Wilder must think about what to do next whether he wins or not. If he is victorious, preparing for a rematch against Fury would be a top priority. If he loses, he should focus on searching for an opponent that would provide a challenge without posing too much risk.
